Maria Giannakaki, painter

Maria Yannakaki was born in 1958. She studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1977 -1982). she studied painting and mosaic techniques with the artists P. Tetsi and G. Kolefa. In 1983 she continued with her post-graduate studies in China where she studied techniques of traditional chinese painting, ink drawing and calligraphy.

She has presented her work in personal and group exhibitions in Greece, China, Germany, Belgium, India, Italy, Luxemburg, Sweden and the USA, including the International Ink and Wash Painting Exhibition in Beijing (1988), the VIII Triennale in New Delhi (1994), the Art Athina in Athens (1995, 1998, 2001 & 2004), the Riparte Fair in Rome (1996), the MiArt in Milano (2003) and the Ιnternational Biennale in Beijing (2005).

From the Chinese art which she studied in its homeland for two years, Maria Yannakaki has retained the materials, in some cases the brush-stroke, the use of white and black on an equal footing, and the two-dimensional space. Her subject-matter, on the other hand, is centred on the human figure with images that remind us in some cases Gauguin or Chagall.

The painting materials of Maria Yannakaki consist of silk and rice paper, inks, Indian ink, water-colours, pastels, coloured pencils and stamps, and depict well-shaped portraits of women and children; Maria Yiannakaki’s painting, is painting at its purest.

Giorgos Papakostas, poet

The poet Giorgos Papakostas was born in Karditsa. It was there that he first went to school. During his early childhood his family moved to Athens, where he continued his studies, while working.

Later he became a civil servant at the Ministry of Finance (General Accounting Office), where he had an important syndicalistic activity that made him very dear to all of his colleagues, as his approach was always realistic, humanitarian and above all friendly.

His meeting with Kostas Misios and the departed Stefanos Vagenas led him to join the ‘’ Panhellenic Literary Union’’ and later the ‘’ Hellenic Literary Society’’.

His first poetic collections were : ‘’ Lines of the Century’’, ‘’ Lost City’’ and ‘’ Angel of the Avenue’’. After the birth of his beloved daughter Mary he published the prose ‘’ Marriage plus and minus ‘’ and the story ‘’ Third World War of the Cities ‘’.

Until now three of his poetic works have been composed by famous Greek composers. Yannis Markopoulos has composed ‘’ The Song of Achilles’’, a hymn to the personality and life of the Homeric Achilles. Yannis Chatzinasios has composed the ‘’ Ode to Alexander the Great’’, for the unrepeatable Greek, the Macedonian King, Alexander the Great and P. Tonios composed ‘’Greece – Genesis and Renaissance of the Centuries’’. These works have been presented at Athens and Thessaloniki Music Halls, Herod’s Auditorium and also at unique places abroad, like the Egyptian Pyramids.

The Hellenist translator of poetic collections and English professor David Conally says, referring to Papakostas’ work : ‘’The philologists and philosophers will discuss and debate about the philosophic thought and the deeper messages of the poet’s works’’. In contemporary poetry, the poet Giorgos Papakostas, succeeds to make the Greek antiquity apropos again, by highlighting worldwide its accomplishments of the unique value.
